Green Stuff!

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are the name of the game here in foods like kale, collard greens, and broccoli. They are powerful antioxidants that are thought to protect against retinal damage, the onset of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

The key to releasing all the good stuff in these greens is cooking it, which makes the vegetables more digestible. Just make sure when you steam, roast or saute, the vegetables turn bright green when they are ready to eat.

Fat is Good!

No praise is enough when you’re talking about Omega-3′s. Not only does DHA and EPA trim your waistline, ease depression, and boost your heart health, it also prevents and slows eyes disease. Plus, Omega-3′s boost cellular health overall.

To get all the great fatty goodness of Omega-3′s, try wild caught salmon, sardines, flaxseeds (make sure you crush the husk before eating, or it goes straight through you), and walnuts.

Egg-cellent!

Cysteine and Sulphur are 2 antioxidants that protect the lens of the eye. Plus, the yolk of eggs are high in Lutein which protects against macular degeneration.You can also eat lots of garlic and onions for sulphur-rich foods, and they also provide excellent anti-virus protection, so you can stay healthy and active.

If you’re concerned about cholesterol when eating eggs, just go for 3 eggs whites to  1 yolk. The yolks, after all, help you digest all the good stuff from the egg.

Orange You Glad!

Orange foods like carrots, apricots and sweet potatoes, are high in Betacarotene which is converted into Vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A not only gives you great skin and prevents wrinkles, it also helps with your night vision. But that’s not the whole story when it comes to orange-colored foods like these.

They also have Lycopene, which protects the eye from UVB rays, and Lutein which is found in the macula and protects it from free radical damage. Try to munch on some orange colored foods everyday in your salads, shakes, and side dishes for dinner.

Feel Blue!

Blueberries are one of my favorite foods because this little berry packs quite a healthy punch. Eat blueberries to reduce your eye fatigue after looking at the computer all day. They also contain Carotenoids Lutein and Zeaxanthin, and Anthocyanins – all eye-nourishing phytonutrients which have been shown to improve night vision. They also contain flavonoids like Rutin, Resveratrol and Quercitin which may have preventative effects on macular degeneration. Blueberries also contain minerals necessary for proper vision including Selenium and Zinc.

And the best part? Eat as many as you like for dessert, in your shakes, in your cereal, or by themselves as a sweet snack. They’re low on the GI Scale, so you’ll never have to feel guilty about treating your peepers right.

Text Like a Ninja is the slogan for this multitasking app for Android, and it’s easy to see why. How much do you hate having to close the app you’re using on your phone, opening your texts, reading, responding, closing your texts, and then opening your original app again. It’s a bit of a downer.

Ninja SMS takes care of that. Basically, if you get a text, it pops up on your screen no matter the app you’re currently running. You can read and reply without disrupting the current app. The battery usage isn’t too bad, and plus, you can program your Settings so that the texts only pop up for certain contacts.

The designers say that composing messages, MMS and file transfer, as well as Facebook integration is coming soon. I think once you can compose messages on this app, it could be a must have on your Android phone.

The last thing I’d like to add to this 5 star review is that the customer service from Ninja Apps is AHmazing. They respond quickly to emails, correspond with bad reviewers, and are genuinely engaged. You really can’t say that of a lot of app designers. Bravo!

Vacations are heaven. Sheer joy. When you travel in the summer, it means you’re taking a break, getting away from it all, and enjoying some much needed relaxation. The worst thing in the world to happen is when your vacation becomes stressful – either because you’ve forgotten something or the actual process of traveling is as fun as having your spleen removed. Let’s take some preventative action now! From the BEARPAW Den, we’ve come up with some proven summer travel tips & tricks to make your vacation stress free. Plan your outfits around 1 or 2 pairs of shoes.

Since shoes will be your heaviest items in your travel bags, plan your outfits around them. I actually lay my outfits out on the bed with my accessories and makeup, so I know exactly what I have and what I’m wearing. I also pray that my cats won’t lay on said outfits … which let’s face it, they always do. (Sigh. I wear my cats with pride.)

For skin, keep it simple as well. Use the same cream for day and night, if you don’t already. Skip the toner and cotton balls.

Don’t fold your clothes. Roll them.

Rolling Clothes

This is one of the best travel tips I’ve ever heard from a friend of mine. Since her job has her on the road every month, she found that her clothes were always wrinkled, especially in the summer when clothes are lighter and mostly cotton. Her tip? Roll your clothes instead. Even better? Roll them around empty paper towel rolls for extra wrinkle protection. I’ve done it ever since, and my clothes come out wrinkle free every time.

Sunscreen. Sunscreen. Sunscreen. And an awesome floppy hat.

I love the sun. The sun is amazing. It gives us energy and light and something utterly romantic to look at twice a day. The sun and I have no quarrel. The sun’s UV rays, however? That’s a different story. Let’s put it this way, if you don’t find a great sunscreen that works with your face and body now, under makeup, by itself, whatever, you’re going to look like rawhide. Which would be the least of your worries considering that small detail of skin cancer. So just do it.

You also want to protect your scalp. You can buy hair UV filters, or you can use spray sunscreen (try Neutrogena’s Fresh Cooling Sunscreen in SPF 45 which is great for spraying on your scalp and face throughout the day to touch up protection), but why not wear a gorgeous, romantic hat? Tricks of the travel trade: makeup remover wipes, facial spray, and blotting papers

When I’m on vacation, I pack much lighter, my skin gets whacked, and I stay up way past my bedtime. Three items to add to your travel pack that are worth their weight and what to do with them:

• Makeup Remover Wipes – Put them by your nightstand at the hotel. When you’re too exhausted to wash your face, wipe one over your skin (especially your eye makeup) and crash.
• Facial Spray – Get the Evian duo pack at Sephora. Put one in your carry-on to spray throughout your flight and for extra credit, put one next to those handy makeup remover wipes. Your skin won’t freak out as much. Plus, you look so elegant spraying it on your face.
• Blotting Papers – These are really toilet seat liners cut into squares. They are so much better than powder when touching up. Plus, if you find your SPF gets a little greasy before you apply makeup over it, you can use these to blot the excess for a matte look.

Breathe, and be nice!!!

Remember, this is vacation time. People are traveling with their children. Planes are late. Traffic may be bad. Things may not go as planned.

Take a deep breath. Use the time waiting for the TSA to inhale and exhale. Better yet, start a friendly conversation with your neighbors in line. We’re all in the same boat. Plus, you’re so much more likely to get better service, more attention and be well liked if you solve problems with kindness. After all, this is your vacation. Enjoy it. Every part of it.

DEMI is the fourth studio album from the songbird Demi Lovato, who’s been in the spotlight more recently for personal demons and as a judge on The X Factor than her music. But her first single “Heart Attack” released back in February already has over 42 million views on YouTube, and if this song is any indication how the rest of the album (released yesterday) plays out then it is worth exploring. Heart Attack retells the age old tale of girl falling for a boy and all the unsure heartbreaking feelings that go hand in hand with love. The chorus features Demi’s booming vocals, and you get the sense she’s using the song as a way to draw a line in the sand in regards to her own boundaries with:

Puttin’ my defences up
‘Cause I don’t wanna fall in love
If I ever did that
I think I’d have a heart attack

Oh, Jordan Catalano, how do I love thee, let me count the ways. Oh, I mean Jared Leto, the serious actor. Sorry, I mean Jared Leto, the serious front man of 30 Seconds to Mars. I kid, and I’m guilty of not taking Mr. Leto’s band seriously, but here they are with their fourth studio album (releasing this week) entitled LOVE, LUST, FAITH + DREAMS. I don’t know about you, but I have experienced all those emotions about Mr. Leto, but I digress. The first release off the album is “Up in the Air” which is accompanied by an 8 and half minute long video (or as they describe it a “short film”) by Bartholomew Cubbins (a.k.a Jared Leto’s alias as a director). Though Up in the Air features similar epic vocals, guitar riffs, and strings to 30 Seconds from Mar’s big hit from their last album, “Kings & Queens”–featured in advertisements for both films Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and Hugo—it falls just a hair short musically. But I got to give Mr. Cubbins credit, the pairing of the song with the video does take the single to another level. And will leave you singing “Whoa” over and over again.

Make way for the Electronic Dance Music masters, because the French duo Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo, most commonly known as Daft Punk, school all the wannabe EDM producers on exactly what it takes to make an eagerly anticipated album that over delivers. With their carefully crafted pre-release marketing campaign that included a surprise live performance at Coachella, along with the who’s who cast of guest producers, vocalists and studio musicians, it’s fair to say I’ve been itching all week  to get my funky Daft Punk groove on in the BEARPAW Den.

The first single “Get Lucky” featuring famed producer Pharrell Williams is EDM perfection – with throwback vocals, funky guitar picks and shake your booty, tap your foot beats, Daft Punk hits it out of the ball park. Each and every track on Random Access Memories is meticulously produced from the disco-influenced “Touch” to the “I’m not sure how this all works, but it does” tracks of “Instant Crush” and “Doin’ It Right” (featuring guest vocals, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes and Panda Bear of Animal Collective, respectively). After listening to the album in its entirety (you won’t be disappointed) you can only come to one conclusion: Daft Punk is the undeniable ruler of the EDM world.

Yes, there are trends, but trends fade. I find that some designers tend to go with a trend without truly thinking about the longevity of the style (wedding dresses with peplum, anyone?).

May is Mediterranean Diet Month. I actually love eating Mediterranean-inspired food because not only is it super healthy, it’s usually pretty easy to make. With pool season upon us, you can chow down on these healthy recipes without spoiling your plan for bikini season as well. In honor of good food, I’ve included 2 of my favorite, easy to make, easy on the hips Mediterranean recipes for you to try this week. The best part? Enjoy a great glass of red wine with them, and feel the sun on your skin … Just like they do on the Mediterranean.

Hummus

Confession: I put hummus on everything: burgers, chips, veggies. I even put hummus on a breakfast burrito with kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes and sheer joy. It’s a great mayonnaise replacement, and chickpeas (who moonlight at Garbonzo beans when they are feeling extra cool) are full of protein, fiber, and iron.

When it comes to hummus, I preach a tahini-free recipe so you avoid chalky or dry hummus. And trust me, make sure all of your ingredients are room temperature when you mix them. It will make everything much smoother.

Ingredients:

1 can of chickpeas

1/4 cup of olive oil (use regular, not extra virgin)

1 tbsp of lemon juice (use an actual lemon here, not from concentrate)

Blend this!

It’s as simple as that. Put this in your food processor, or use a blender for all the ingredients. When you serve it, create a small crater in the center of the humus, fill it with just a touch of olive oil, a few whole chickpeas, and sprinkle whatever seasoning you like over it. I like to sprinkle Za’taar, which is a mixture of thyme, sumac, and sesame.

Want to be fancy pants? Of course you do.

Roast 4 cloves of garlic and mix that with the above blend. You can also add sundried tomatoes, jalapenos, and even artichoke hearts. The possibilities are endless, as are the compliments you’ll get when you make your own hummus and not questionable store bought powder.

Cold Lentil Salad

Lentil soup is one of my favorite recipes of all time, but when it gets warm, the last thing I want to do is sweat over a bowl of soup. Instead, I make this and stay cool, calm, and my upper-lip remains sweat mustache-free.

Ingredients:

1 cup of brown lentils

1/4 cup toasted pine nuts

4 roasted garlic cloves, diced

2 leeks, sliced

2 carrots, diced

3 tbsp olive oil (not extra virgin)

Kosher salt, to taste

Let’s do this.

Rinse the lentils to make sure there’s no gooey weirdness in them. Yes, “gooey weirdness” is a chef’s term. Just ask.

Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the lentils. Lower to a simmer and cover for about 15 to 20 minutes. You don’t want to overcook the lentils, so keep an eye out for mushiness.

In a small saute pan, saute the carrots over medium heat with olive oil. Once they give just a bit when you press them with your spatula, add the leeks. The leeks will separate into rings and cook quickly. Once you can smell the leeks, keep your eyeballs from rolling back into your head, and add 1 clove of the roasted garlic. Give a nice swirl, and remove from heat.

Once the lentils are cooked, put them into the refrigerator to cool. Technically, this should take about 30 minutes, but let’s be honest, by the time I’m at this step, I’m starving. Want to put them in the freezer for 5 minutes and the ‘fridge for 20? I won’t tell.

In a bowl, mix the ingredients together. Add another splash of olive oil and salt to taste.

Serve with the hummus above, sliced red and orange peppers for dipping, and a great glass of red wine.

Can I say it’s this is the mother of all holiday’s? How about Ideas for Taking Mom Out of the Mother Ship? I know, I know … but in all seriousness, it’s time for you to take your mom out this Mother’s Day to show her how much you appreciate her. Here’s a foolproof 4 step guide for everyone who still is yet to make plans … Step 1: Brunch

You have to take your mom to a nice brunch on Mother’s Day. It’s in the handbook. First, she’ll get bottomless mimosas, and this will relax her enough to tell embarrassing stories about your siblings. Secondly, there is something ridiculously exciting about having breakfast after 11:00 am. It’s kind of like sliding into McDonald’s and getting the last Egg McMuffin at 10:59.

Step 2: Arboretum or Botanical Gardens

I’m pretty sure Hallmark scheduled Mother’s Day in the Spring because all mom’s love flowers and wearing a cardigan in 70 degree weather. Most cities have beautiful, public arboretums and botanical gardens which are either free or minimally priced. Everything is in bloom right now, from apple trees to lilacs to tulips. The scent in the air is amazing, and you’ll also be in a great place to take lots of pictures which you will then post on Facebook as you compete with your friends to see who is the best child. Boom. You won.

Step 3: Go See The Great Gatsby

This is a movie I think moms will love. First, it has dreamboat Leonardo DiCaprio who is ever easy on the peepers in this stylish take on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. The look of the film is quite beautiful too. As an added bonus to make mom proud of the education she worked tirelessly to give you, you can lean over mid-movie and say, “You know, mom, the depiction of the historical struggle to climb the socioeconomic ladder while juxtaposing the American dream against ever growing classism is quite fascinating in this movie; don’t you agree?”

Step 4: Give Her a Gift

Yesterday, I posted on the Do’s and Don’ts of Mother’s Day gift giving. Trust me on this – your mom wants a new pair of stylish BEARPAW Slip-Ons. They make mom jeans look super cute. You may think it’s the Oscars or the Grammy’s where fashion reigns supreme for the evening, but even those events have the illusion of performing the perfunctory function of handing out awards and congratulating performance. The Met Gala, however, is the only event where fashion takes center stage on the red carpet. It doesn’t matter whether you have a blockbuster under your belt, or you’re dating one of Taylor Swifts ex-boyfriends; on this red carpet, if you have the outfit and the $25,000 ticket to enter, you’ll be seen. One of my favorite things to do after any event is scroll through all the sites from the BEARPAW Den to see red carpet arrivals, beauty tips, behind the scenes, and commentary. After all, who doesn’t love a good “Best” and “Worst” dressed list? So while I choose my favorite outfits and makeup, here’s a roundup of the best sites to check out while you pretend to work. As I scrolled through the red carpet arrivals on People (my favorite place to check out the overall event pictures), I couldn’t help but think some people missed the memo. Granted, it’s hard to do punk style because punk style is … well, ugly. Let’s face it, punk rock was never about looking beautiful. Punk is about defiance and counter-culture, not couture. A few women nailed it, however, mixing edgy patterns, makeup and style with just enough traditional beauty to not be embarrassed 5 years from now when they look back to see what they were wearing. Sarah Jessica Parker in Giles Deacon Dress & Phillip Treacy Mohawk Headress
